Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Helps Local Military Families

The club recently helped repair and rebuild a loading dock at Camp Pendleton that is used to help process and distribute unused donated items such as furniture, canned goods and clothing to base families.

What happens when the one doing the hand outs needs a helping hand? Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club was among those there to provide that assistance to the non-profit Military Outreach Ministry (MOM) on Camp Pendleton on Saturday, Sept. 8. Hi-Noon Rotarians, working alongside a group of Marines and members of Teen Volunteers in Action (TVIA), tore down and rebuilt a loading dock that has been used for eight years by MOM to process and distribute items to the base families for free such as furniture, housewares, pajamas, baby-care items, mattresses, canned goods, and more.

These items, always new, have been donated by businesses, schools, churches or service groups, such as Rotary. Military Outreach Ministry coordinator Faye Bell was very appreciative of the work done Sept, 8, saying the loading dock rebuilding project "saved us many thousands of dollars that we don't have, and I thank the Rotarians and the others who helped with this project.”

Not long ago, the Hi-Noon Rotary Club, a part of the worldwide Rotary International service organization of business men and women, collected 100 bags of canned goods and donated cash to be used to purchase additional food for MOM.

The club also provides scholarships to war veterans who would like to go to pursue or further a college education. The funds are raised from the club’s annual Teens and Marines Golf Tournament. In the last three years, the club has awarded more than 30 scholarships to veterans who are returning to or starting classes at MiraCosta Community College.

“North County is blessed to have Camp Pendleton in our proximity,” said Hi-Noon president Yvonne Finocchiaro, “but just like many communities, there also are those on base who also need some extra help. Hi-Noon Rotary, and many other Rotary clubs in the area roll up our sleeves to help where we can . . . all a part of saying ‘Thank you for YOUR service’ to our dedicated volunteer military.”
